This month's meeting:
"Logging and Monitoring: Technical and Legal Aspects"
Dr. Peter Honeyman and Joseph M. Saul, of the University of
Michigan.
Sponsored by the Network Security Business Unit (in Dublin, Ohio) of
Ascend Communications, Inc. and The Ohio State University (see
below).
Peter and Joe will give a lively presentation covering the technical
and legal issues involved with logging and monitoring computer
activity of all sorts. I have given them copies of some of OSU's
policies, practices and guidelines regarding these issues so that
they can inject some local flavor into the talk. Although we will
be talking to some degree about OSU specific issues, I think that
the discussion will be of interest to everyone since they'll be
using us as examples (both good and bad, I'm sure), not as primary
source material.
Peter and Joe prepared this talk for the Committee on Institutional
Cooperation (CIC) Security Education Consortium. The CIC Security
Education Consortium is a unique, cooperative arrangement among the
CIC member institutions to make available low-cost, high quality
training and educational opportunities in the security aspects of
system and network administration. The Logging and Monitoring
seminar will be the first of these to be held at OSU.
Peter and Joe gave a condensed version of this talk as an Invited
Talk at the 1997 LISA conference last week which was well received.
When and Where
Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, we are holding this month's meeting
on Wednesday, November 19th (and *not* the 26th, as it would usually
be). The meeting will be longer than usual as well - the meeting
itself will start promptly at 1 PM, and will last until around 5 PM.
We'll take an afternoon break (with light refreshments).
Since we expect a slightly higher attendance than usual, we're
meeting in a different location as well. I've arranged for us to
use Mount Hall 145, a large auditorium on West Campus. There's
plenty of parking there for campus people with passes, and some
meters in front of the building for visitors. Note that there are
only about 15 meters - I will happily arrange for parking passes for
those who don't want to chance the meters, but you'll need to RSVP
with me so that I know how many to get.
Getting There and Parking
For a campus map, see http://www.acs.ohio-state.edu/units/uts/campus
/sectors/campus.html (that's all one long URL, ignore the line
break). Click on "building index", look for "Mount Hall", enlarge
and pan around in the map (using the edges and corners of the map).
Mount Hall is where our office of Continuing Education is.
From Lane Avenue, turn South on Kenny, then West (right) on Carmack
Rd. At this point, Mount Hall is on your far right. If you have a
campus parking pass, park in the big lot to the left and walk on
over. There are a few parking meters around the loop directly in
front of Mount Hall. If you need a pass, pull up in front of Mount
Hall and come inside to get a parking pass from me (but *please*
RSVP so that I know you need one in advance). Then you can proceed
to the big parking lot. There's a walkway running from the
Northeast corner of the parking lot, across Carmack Rd toward Mount
Hall.
RSVP's and Questions
If you plan to attend, we would appreciate it if you could let us
know. This is especially important if you will be needing parking
passes - I need to pick those up a day or two ahead of time, and
will need to know how many to procure. If you don't RSVP, you may be
stuck circling and circling, looking for a parking meter. I'd also
like to ensure that we have plenty of handouts, refreshments and so
on. If you could RSVP by Monday, November 17th, that would be
great.
To RSVP, or if you have questions, you can (preferably) send mail to
romig@net.ohio-state.edu or call me at 688-3412.

encrypted remote access (Remote Access). They are also responsible
for developing new products related to intrusion detection, IP
security, public key infrastructure, security management and
security auditing.

Thank you Very Much!
Next month:
Note that next month we are rescheduling the meeting as well. I
suspect that we will meet on the 3rd Wednesday, but haven't made
arrangements yet. Stay tuned. I think we may discuss recent events
regarding cryptography, but we'll see.
About these meetings:
The Network Security Group meetings are usually held on the fourth
Wednesday of each month from 4-6 PM on the Ohio State University
main campus in Columbus (usually in Baker Systems 120). The goal of
our meetings is to share information about computer security tools,
practices and problems. Anyone and everyone are invited to attend.
We also have mailing lists for people who are interested in
discussing network security issues, or who just want announcements
about meetings and security bulletins. Send mail to
netwog-security-request@lists.net.ohio-state.edu for more
information.
