The next OSU Network Security meeting will be this next Wednesday,
April 24th from 4-6 PM in Baker Systems Engineering room 120 on
the Ohio State main campus.

The topic this month is "Media Law 101 for the Internet", by Steve
McDonald. Steve is the former Prime Minister of England, the only
three-time winner of *both* the Heisman trophy and the Nobel prize,
and...oh, sorry. That's the bio for May's speaker :-)

Steve McDonald is a 1982 graduate of Duke University and a 1985
graduate of the Yale Law School. He currently is an Associate Legal
Counsel in the Office of Legal Affairs, where has has dealt with a
number of computer-related legal issues, including the Communications
Decency Act, various copyright infringement claims by the Church of
Scientology and others, and even an e-mail death threat to Socks the
cat. He is also currently teaching a course on these issues in the
College of Law. Before coming to Ohio State, he was in private
practice and specialized in media law and First Amendment-related
matters. He was one of the lead attorneys for CompuServe Incorporated
in Cubby v. CompuServe, the first libel lawsuit in cyberspace.

You might recall Steve from a talk last year on the public records law
(where he brought the big rock that is part of OSU's public record).
I asked him to come talk to us about media law and the Internet, after
reading a fascinating summary that he had written. Copies should be
available at the meeting.

No PGP key signing this month. I may not be back in town in time for
the meeting - I'll be at Penn State in the early part of the week,
talking about our Incident Response Team and my favorite security
tools.

The Network Security Group meetings are usually held on the fourth
Wednesday of each month from 4-6 PM on the Ohio State University main
campus in Columbus (usually in Baker Systems 120). The goal of our
meetings is to share information about computer security tools,
practices and problems. Anyone and everyone are invited to attend.

We also have mailing lists for people who are interested in discussing
network security issues, or who just want announcements about meetings
and security bulletins. Send mail to
netwog-security-request@lists.net.ohio-state.edu for more information.
