The next OSU Network Security meeting will be this next Wednesday,
February 28th from 4-6 PM in Baker Systems Engineering room 120 on
the Ohio State main campus.
It'll be security tool demo day.
We'll start by talking about TCP and UDP port scanning, and give a demo
of a very fast scanner called strobe. We'll look at at least one scan
detector, and we'll talk a little about stealth scanning and what you
can do about it.
Then we'll talk about and demo CFS, the Cryptographic File System,
which is Way Cool. It provides a way to transparently access files
that have been encrypted without storing the plaintext on disk
temporarily. As Martha Stewart would say, "Its a good thing."
Finally, if we have time, I'll demonstrate the web interface to MIT's
PGP key server and talk about what'd be involved in setting up a key
server here, PGP key certification and related issues. We'd like to
promote the use of PGP at OSU. I'd like to cap the meeting off with a
PGP key signing party.
If you want to participate in the key signing, then before the meeting
you need to:
0. get and install pgp
http://web.mit.edu/network/pgp.html
1. create a pgp private/public key pair
2. sign your own key
http://www.quadralay.com/www/Crypt/PGP/pgp06.html
3. send ME your public key
Bring a copy of your key's fingerprint to the meeting. I'm using the
scheme described in
http://www.quadralay.com/www/Crypt/PGP/pgp06.html#608 if you are
curious.
The Network Security Group meetings are usually held on the fourth
Wednesday of each month from 4-6 PM on the Ohio State University main
campus in Columbus (usually in Baker Systems 120). The goal of our
meetings is to share information about computer security tools,
practices and problems. Anyone and everyone are invited to attend.
We also have mailing lists for people who are interested in discussing
network security issues, or who just want announcements about meetings
and security bulletins. Send mail to
netwog-security-request@lists.net.ohio-state.edu for more information.
