"Lives Behind the Lies"
Amnesty International's campaign against
"Disappearances" and Political Killings
Thursday, December 9, 1993
Alicia Partnoy survived being "disappeared", held in
unacknowledged detention for years, by the government of Argentina.
She will speak at several public events in Columbus, including a
noon seminar at OSU and a poetry reading at Borders Bookstore at
7:30 pm. She will also speak on WOSU AM 820 from 3 pm to 4 pm.
Alicia Partnoy is the Vice Chairperson of Amnesty
International USA's Board of Directors. She is a human rights
activist, poet and author of The Little School: Tales of
Disappearance and Survival in Argentina, Revenge of the
Apple/Venganza de la Manzana, a bilingual collection of poetry, and
edited the anthology You can't Drown the Fire: Latin American
Women Writing in Exile.
During her years as a "disappeared" person and political
prisoner in Argentina, her stories and poems were smuggled out of
prison and published anonymously in human rights journals. Since
her arrival in the United States, she has lectured extensively at
the invitation of Amnesty International, religious organizations,
and universities. Partnoy has presented testimony on human rights
violations in Argentina to the United Nations, the Organization of
American States, and human rights organizations in Argentina. Her
testimony was quoted in the final report of the Argentine
Commission for the Investigation of Disappearance which helped
bring about the conviction of four junta generals in Buenos Aires.
Partnoy was a key member of the Survivors Committee which
successfully put a human face on government abuses during the
United Nation's World Conference on Human rights held this past
June in Vienna. Partnoy will be a major spokesperson during
Amnesty International's year-long campaign against Disappearances
and Political Killings which was launched on October 20, 1993.
The OSU Brown Bag Seminar is at 12 noon, December 9, in room
122 Oxley Hall, 1712 Neil Avenue. It is brought to you by Women in
Development Interest Group (WID), The Center for Women's Studies,
Division of Comparative Studies in the Humanities, and Latin
American Studies Center.
Ms. Partnoy also will be a guest on WOSU's "Open Line" radio
program between 3 pm and 4 pm on Thursday, December 9. Tune your
radio to 820 AM. This program is re-broadcast during the evening.
WOSU can be received throughout central Ohio.
