New Proposal: ottawa.carleton.general

I propose that the above newsgroup be formed.

The carelton.* hierarchy of newsgroups have been removed from
universal distribution. The propsed newsgroup will fill that void
and be of use to those who have an interest in Carleton University,
either as students, faculty members, alumni, and the general public
interested in the university, who arte not within the confines of the
*.carleton.ca domain.

I do not include a proposed charter here as I feel it should be
discussed amongst supporters or detractors of the proposal.

Anyone?

Since it is for Carleton University, why not carleton.public.general.
The carleton.public.* hierarchy would be distributed, while the rest
carleton.* would not.

I believe there is already a newsgroup that would fit that charter. How
about using ott.general?

I was recently watching carleton.general but got tired of the
censorship discussion and all the yelling, so unsubscribed. I was
also watching ott.general and was tired of seeing the same
conversation as on carleton.general, so unsubscribed. Surely we don't
need another forum to cross post to?

I agree that Carleton issues rarely affect general Ottawa, and if one
wants to become involved, they can get a freenet account...

This is not great solution. FreeNet's modems/computers are congested, and
telnetting in is a pain. I for one, would much rather read news on my own
computer with my own newsreader.

This would be a terrific idea if 95% of the world's population lived in
Ottawa, but they don't.

The notion behind the proposal it very simple. Carelton does not want
the rest of the world posting on carleton.general. There are people all
over the world interested in Carleton-specific issues. Give them an
arena for these discussions
outside the control of Carleton.

One need not worry about cross-posting to carleton.general.
If the ng is configured as described by administrators, it will not
accept a post from outside its domain. If it is, it'll just get
cancelled anyway.

The forum also provides student access to outside feedback, something
they will not get if carelton.general is configured for local
distribution.

Carleton issues belong inside Carleton. Things within Carleton
rarely affect anything outside of Carleton (especially the things
that get disscussed in this newsgroup).

As opposed to c.g. Riiight.

c.g. *is* available to the public, and will continue to be after the
split. It's not hard to get a National Capital Freenet account, after all.

I don't think so Robert. Some of the folks on ott.general are already
sick of the carleton stuff pouring over there. The proposed newsgroup
would deal with Carelton specific issues.

If anything, I would support the idea suggested by Matthew Darwin, a
carelton.public.general, though Im unsure if this is the right place to
pursue that

The idea is to have a forum for Carleton issues available to the public.
Either of the two mentioned so far would accomplish this.

ott.general would not.

I agree with this. Carleton.* is not distributed because of the amount
of SPAM that seems to result. Having a small number of groups that are
shared with the public might solve both problems. We dont want to have
ott.* end up too large.

We need to look into some better solutions to the SPAM problem than not
distributing groups. We now have people using FORGED SPAM as a way to
attack another Net.person (A recent get-rich quick posting to a number of
flora.* groups ended up being a personal attack against the person with
the Email address in the From: line).

If various governments (One in particular) would get off it's dark-ages
understanding of cryptography and allow for public key signatures of
messages, we might be able to get some of these problems solved.

  I'd love to send this:

"Sorry, but I have put your Public key in my killfile. My computer will
no longer accept any information in any form that originates from you."

With of course the stipulation that a single person cannot just keep
applying for new keys every day.
