Abstract:
The increasing complexity of the computing environment, and the rise in
user expectations, makes achieving satisfactory portability
increasingly hard. De jure and de facto standards, and the tools and
techniques of portability technology represent complementary
approaches to addressing this problem. the broader view is that
portability and the closely related problems of internationalization
and interoperability are best treated as instances of software reuse.
Biography:
W. Morven Gentleman is Head of the Software Engineering Laboratory in
the Institute for Information Technology at the National Research
Council of Canada. Before going to the NRC, he was a professor of
computer science at the University of Waterloo for fifteen years, and
before that he was a member of technical staff at Bell Telephone
Laboratories, Murray Hill. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from
Princeton University (1965). His research activities include software
engineering, computer architecture, robotics, computer algebra, and
numerical analysis. Dr. Gentleman has extensive experience building,
supporting, and applying computer systems in research and industrial
environments. He has built and supported various commercial software
products.
