Hi there, 
I would like to get any information you might have about the 60 day
advance notice before vacating
an apartment in Ontario. Here is my problem:

I signed a lease for the period of May 1st, 96 -> April 31st, 97. I was
waiting for a lease renewal notice ( rent increase notice ) but never
received one. I contacted the building office and they send me one in
the middle of March, about 1.5 months before the end of my lease. The
amount of rent was not increased. Anyways, we decided that we could get
a better place for the same price, so after asking the on-site office if
it is ok to give the notice then, and being told that it is ok, we gave
a notice signed on March 18th that we will vacate on May 1st. Well, now
the head office has sent a letter saying that we are responsible for the
month of May also, since it was not a two month advance notice.

Now , we have already signed a lease for the new place, and we are being
told that we have to give a months rent for the old place as well. What
can we do?  Please, if you have any info, or know of similar cases,
please let me know. I really really appreciate it.

PS. The head office claims that they did not have to send a renewal this
year since the apartment was maturing on April 1st, which was one month
before the end of our  lease. So, they weren't responsible to sending us
anything until next April (98), and would automatically put us on a
month to month basis until then.
