Hi all, I'll try and describe the problem I am experiencing as accurately as possible. The problem is with a 2000 KLR650 with approx 4500km on it. The bike runs great at the start of a ride however at any point during the ride the bike will just start to chug and then the engine will stall. I can keep trying and trying to get it to restart often killing the battery. If I am lucky enough to get it to restart its with the choke on full and revving up the engine to keep it running. Letting off the gas will cause the engine to stall. Also while I do manage to get it to run with full choke and lots of revs gas is running out of the hose attached to the carburetor. If i let the bike sit overnight then its fine the next day. When it will act up is entirely unpredictable and my local bike shop says it can't look at the problem until the problems occurs which is usually no where near there location. By the time I get it to them the problem has gone away. Any suggestions would be extremely appreciated as I can't trust the bike to take on anything but the shortest ride around my neighbourhood. Thanks in advance Rob Kirkby

Here's two links that should help: http://www.micapeak.com/reg/bikes/KLR/ http://www.bikez.com/msgboard/msg.php?id=4274&type=bike Sounds like the choke linkage might be stuck - I can't remember if it is a cable or direct mechanical linkage on the Killers, but you might want to start by checking there. The excess fuel spilling out the overflow hose on the carb makes me think this is the culprit. -- Mike "Gummiente" Palmer '04 FLHT "Babe" Gananoque, Ontario - a proud Canadian! Could also be a Petcock problem or dirty carbs/lines. Did you prep the bike before storage? When all else fails (or before), try running a double or triple dose of SeaFoam gas additive in that tank. Cleans up "gunk' well on the Kawasaki's and others of course... I'm thinking vapor lock, but not if you have gas pouring out the carb! -- Joe - V#8013 - '86 VN750 - joe @ yunx .com Ask me about "The Ride" on July 31, '04: http://www.youthelate.com/the_ride.htm Born once - Die twice. If it starts okay with the cap off, you've got a venting problem with the tank. If it's got a vented cap, your cap could be bad. Rayvan

Take the carb apart and clean it THOROUGHLY. I would suspect the idle (primary jet). Clean the centre hole and the 8 or so holes around the barrel. You claim the carb is overflowing. Then it sounds like the float needle isn't doing its thing due to it not seating. More dirt. Take it all apart. -- All the best, Alex Alex's BMW Motorcycle & Global Touring Page http://www.ott.igs.net/~ace -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 100,000 Newsgroups - 19 Different Servers! =-----

Hi Rob. Before you do anything, please check your oil. Check the level (I'm guessing it's high) and sniff it for gas. This is quite common and a sign of fuel getting past the needle valve and flowing into the cylinder, past the rings and into the crank case. Please ignore any parts that are spelled out in too much detail. The fix, easiest to hardest: Check the petcock. Not set to PRI. Check the float level. (tube from the carb drain, looped upwards to form a "U" and ending higher than the carb, open drain, level rises to same height in tube as in bowl) Pull the carb (God bless singles) and open it up. Check that the float unit moves. Remove the needle valve. Check the tip. Blow out the hole where it makes the seal. Reinstall, check float level. Should be good to go.
