"Com overruns" can indeed exist with Ethernet.

Most Ethernet cards have a limited amount of buffer memory on them -
typically 8-16 KB. If you get a burst of packets that temporarily
exceeds the rate at which your computer can receive them, you will
get a receiver overrun.

In practice, if I set up NFS from my SparcStation to my Amiga 3000/16,
using 8K datagram sizes, I will get receiver overruns galore on the Amiga
whenever I read a large file.
