Assuming that the headers below are the complete headers, I don't see anything that suggests to me the email was spoofed. The travel-net.com addresses listed in the headers are valid. If I were Matt Byrd, I would betalking to a lawyer and/or police as it is a death threat. Travel-net.com should be able to confirm that the message did come from Wiper's dial-up and not just a travel-net.com customer who has set their email to pretend they're Scott Wiper by checking their logs. If they show that his dial-up was assigned the IP address in question at the time indicated by the headers and logs, then there is a high degree of probability that it was indeed sent by Wiper. It would probably take a warrant for the police to get this information, but if I was travel-net.com, I would consider doing this "internally" to ensure that one of my customers wasn't using my service to utter death threats. > > From Scott Wiper Tues Nov 09 23:27:42 1999 > > X-Apparently-To: matt_byrd@yahoo.com via mdd101.yahoomail.com > > Received: from mail.travel-net.com (204.92.71.26) by > > mta109.yahoomail.com with SMTP; 11 Apr 199923:33:09 -0700 > > Received: from default (trj7.travel-net.com [207.176.160.7]) by > > mail.travel-net.com (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id > > CAA26992 for <matt_byrd@yahoo.com>; Tues Nov 09,1999 02:29:32 -0400 > > Message-Id:<199911090659.CAA26992@mail.travel-net.com> > > From: "Scott Wiper" <swiper@"NOUCE".travel-net.com> > > To: "Matt Bryd" <matt_byrd@yahoo.com> > > Subject: To Matt Byrd. watch you're back > > Date: Tues, 09 Nov 1999 02:27:42 -0400 > > X-MSMail-Priority: Hi > > X-Priority: 1 > > X-Mailer: Microsoft Internet Mail 4.70.1161 > > Content-Length: 688 --G -- Gordon Dewis | Tired of using "military intelligence" as an example BA Hons Geography | of an oxymoron?
