I hope that none of you ever have to deal with users breaking into your Hotmail account and sending out emails under your name. In seeking help for this very same situation, instead of help I got automated responses about why spam isn't tolerated, and then they closed my account without warning. Just had to vent. For those that I've missed, my new address (embarrassed to say I still need hotmail) is allaboutamy2001@hotmail.com

The address that shoes up under "sent by" is mine, but I just have no interest in sending myself information on caesar salad diet recipes, hot naked teens on camera (unless it's Prince William), nor do I ever think I'm the next $25,000 winner. My question is: does someone have to break into my account in order for those messages to appear to have been sent by me? Is it possible I'm not the only one getting "my" spam? In any case, I've had enough with the spam spam spam. It doesn't even come with toast, eggs, beans or bacon.

I have found it to be far better than hotmail, and you can choose fun addreses (@cheerful.com, @loveable.com), you can get your e-mail automatically forwarded to another address, and also use spam filtering. So if it isn't actually hotmail that you need, but rather a similar (but better) web-based e-mail account, then try http://www.mail.com Martha2Mary -- (To reply by e-mail, remove Windows)

While I should consider drizzling a circle of salt at the front door and lighting another of fire around the entire house, I'm too busy trying to pick the plastic circle thing out from under the cap to my Schweppes so I can add it to my collection. Apparently if you just send emails to abuse@hotmail.com they will ignore everything you say and close your account. Or just don't use it for 60 days. They'll close it if it's inactive that long too. Wellm they didn't have to break in. They could've pretended to be YOUR email off their internet account. I do beleive I can answer everyones questions regarding SPAM and also hotmail. I work for an ISP. 1. How do they send mail from me to me? Its quite easy and if you know what your doing you can forge the header. You telnet into an SMTP server and send the mail text based and modify the message header. 2. What can you do to protect yourself? Forward the message header to your local ISP or if you know how to read headers to the sending ISP. Usually something like abuse@isp.com. Should they find that it was forged they can usually trace the source and check logs for who sent it. Logs show username or IP depending on service. They then contact the person in question. The other major thing is "DON'T REPLY". For those messages that say "Click here to be removed" or "Reply to be removed" don't do it. This just confirms your address as a working one. 3. As for hotmail... Use a password at least 7 chars long with numbers and letters. It takes over 6 months to crack a 7 letter pass through brute force. Its highly unlikely that someone broke into your account. It is possible though. When your sending passwords on the net its all clear text. Very easy to intercept. Unless the site is on a "secure" server. As for deactivating your account the only way that I know if is don't use it for 3 months or 90 days. Hope this helps and clears things up. -- GRiM - "Early bird gets the worm; but the second mouse gets the cheese!"
