Type 1 fonts in OS X?

Hello,

Does anyone know how to install Type 1 fonts (i.e. those composed of pfm and
pfb files, as those that Adobe sells) in OS X?

Different sources claim that OS X supports Type 1 & other PostScript fonts
natively (being a unix after all), but copying the files in to the Font
folders of wither the global of the user Library leaves the system rather
cold about all this.

Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Peter
