I wasnt suggesting it as a permanent config, just as a test to see if you could get the system to allocate the IRQs more intelligently. You arw having a problem with a bios which has limited manual control over the allocation of IRQs to devices and one way around that would be to get it to boot without the extreme shortage of IRQs but with both the scanner and the network card still in the system. It may well then allocate separate IRQs to those two properly and be able to allocate the hardware you removed properly when you add that last. The bios keeps track of device allocations in the ESCD. >>> So the best I can do is disable either one or >>> the other when I need to use one or the other. >> Bet its possible to end up with a better solution than that. > I'm sure it is, but I can't envisage one. Bet its possible to get the IRQs allocated properly because you arent as short of IRQs as you think. You're basically attempting to resort to a manual workaround before you have carefully checked that it isnt possible to get the system allocating resources properly with all the hardware in use. >>> I was thinking that if values were stored in a registry, I could >>> just make a .reg file and that could change values easily. >> Its more complicated than that because Win9x attempts to >> detect what is present at boot time, mainly to cover the situation >> where some stuff may not be powered up at boot time etc. > Yeah, thought that may be the case. >> And you dont need to use .reg files to achieve what you want to do, there is >> a hardware profiles system in the device manager which does what you want. > Ah, so that's what that does. Yeah, if you do want a manual workaround, thats the way to do it. >> If you dont want to do that, use the hardware profiles. > So do I do that through device manager, properties, > exists in all properties (unchecking the box)? Well, you obviously need two separate profiles, one each with one of the scanner/network card pair enabled. There's a separate Hardware Profiles tab in the Device Manager.
