True colour to high colour in one fowl swoop?

Hi everyone.

Is there a way that you can change between true colour and high colour in
Windows95 without having to reboot the computer.

I got Half-life for Christmas, and it won't run without my computer being
in high colour (which seems a tad strange that it won't run in true
colour).

Alternatively, does anyone know how to make Half-life run in true colour
mode.

Thanks -- Josh

Josh

This is usually hardware dependent.
Get hold of quickres from the m$ powertoys and see what it does.

That's configurable in Display/Settings/Advanced, whether to require
a reboot or not. Thats in Win98 anyway, pretty sure that didnt change.

Basically a speed consideration.

For win95 its not that much diff to 98
Display/Settings/Advanced/Performance.
Also in 95 in the Settings cat. it gives you the option of adding a
setting icon to the task bar, makes it easier when wanting to switch
between Half Life and your normal desktop settings ive found.

He has not sixteen million colours.

Sixteen million of my pretty ones?

Did you say, sixteen million?

O hell-kite!

Sixteen million?

What, sixteen million of my pretty colours and their VRAM

At one fell swoop?

(Apologies to Will, couldn't help myself)

I don't beleive you.

Just to check, I tried the following cards in my Windows box....

Tseng Labs ET4000 ISA
Trident TVGA ISA
S3 Trio32 1MB
S3 Trio64 2MB
S3 Virge/dx
Diamond Stealth II

And switched all cards between 8 and 256 colours (the highest colour
depth common to all cards) and all worked fine.

Mabey I have the rare combo of old cards that all can do it, I don't
know.

Sounds like you need more memory on your video card.

And if you set them to hi color mode what happens?

That what the original poster asked.

Uh,

I looked in the advanced settings under properties (Right click on
desktop). You can select the option to apply settings without restarting
the computer. Hope this helps.

Have you considered 'Quickres', one of the powertoys from Microsoft.
