I got a call last night, from someone who said they were offering me a
free trial of various kinds of educational, games and desktop publishing
software. He says if I didn't like the software, I could keep it at no
cost. He said all he needed was my address and credit card number and
expiration date.

When I told him I didn't feel comfortable giving out my credit card number
over the phone and asked hime to send me something in the mail, he hung
up on me.

I think it was a scam to get my credit information in order to make
fraudulent charges.

I advise everyone else to be wary of such offers.

No idea if this is the same deal as a customer of mine told me this
morning....Seems they sell you a disk for 14.95 and if you don't call back to
stop them they then charge club dues of 49.95<they didn't mention this to him
when they called him initially>. He wasn't too happy with the deal. Although
this company was semi legit in that he'd purchased SW from them earlier which
was how they got his name. Seems he won't be filling out any more registration
cards giving away his name/phone #.

One thing he did do was request their name/phone/etc and checked to see that
such a company existed and then called to see that the person who called
actually worked for that company...all that and still slipped in the "club
dues" on him.

Never Ever give a credit card number to someone over the phone unless you have
initiated the call and know whom you are talking with.

I have two favorite responses for phone solicitors depending where I am.
If they call me at home, I tell them I am very busy and if they give me
THEIR home number I will be sure to call them back when I finish with
what I am doing. If they call me at work, then I tell them I am not the
person in charge of purchasing, but if they leave me their name and phone
number I will have the purchasing agent call them upon their arrival. In
both cases you can about imagine how quickly the call ends from there.
