~ There is only one place other than Portland where your dog might be happier. Men's Health magazine says Colorado Springs, Colo., is the overall No. 1 city for dogs, with Portland No. 2. The magazine looked at seven criteria, including percent of ownership, dog parks, pet stores, animal shelters, boarding/day care, veterinarians and the fewest cases of heartworm. Portland ranked No. 1 in dog parks and pet stores, No. 2 in veterinarians and heartworm, No. 8 in animal shelters, No. 25 in ownership and No. 27 in boarding/day care. Rounding out the overall top five cities are Albuquerque, N.M.; Tuscon, Ariz.; and Seattle. The city with the most unhappy dogs is Detroit. ~

I could see that, not sure any living thing could be happy in Detroit.

There is heartworm in the PNW, at least enough to give cause for worry. Like other vector-born diseases (West Nile comes to mind), the fact that the PNW vets jumped on it early and are pretty insistent on dealing with it keeps it rather more controlled. >That would seem to give the northwest >a big advantage over the southeast (unless they normalize) In the SE, it got started earlier, control measures aren't Nearly so widespread, so there's more of it there. My dogs both get their heartworm doses the first of every month. Always have. Most local dog owners do that -- at least those who provide regular medical care to their dogs.
