From WRTA.com LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Global Conspiracy By Johnny Defiace - Altoona, PA Aug 3, 2006 Dear Professor Slekar, The only warming that is going on globally is the warm fuzzy feeling inside that socialists get when they think that they're bettering society by trying to make policy based upon theories on an unsettled issue. Politically, it is in the best interest of the socialists and their party to create a great concern amongst the public. This means using their natural extension of the media to create hype and disseminate false information or half-truths. The New York Times and Washington Post have been reputably known to mislead their stories and reporting to sway public opinion to the left. What else would expect from them but nothing but full support for the Global Warming theory. But let us get past opinion and observations a little bit. Let us talk about facts. We have a very limited amount of reliable data to go off of. Even your beloved Washington Times admits that over the past twenty-five years, the temperatures have shown no pattern of increase. Satellite surface temperature readings have been the only reliable source of detecting trends and the technology has not been around long enough to properly determine trends. Even still, here is what is shown thus far. Source #1: <http://www.ncpa.org/~ncpa/ba/gif/ba230a.gif> Does that look like an upward trend of temperatures? Is that what you're basing your blind following of the Global Warming theory on? Or could it be that your political views on socialism are greatly aligned with other liberals in office (who see this as a political opportunity) and you dare not challenge the thought and reason behind anyone of your own party? There are a slew of scientists who have spent quite a bit of time on this theory (have we forgotten what theory means?) and have come to several different conclusions. If I wanted to, I could go through and find thousands of highly qualified scientists who have published writings on the issue either way. Perhaps you should seek out the factual information and think for yourself. Secondly, I want to address the point about this "consensus" amongst scientists, as if this is a settled issue, and some rogue conservative scientists are being let loose to throw everyone off the proper path. The article you mentioned, and the scientist who wrote it is entitled to her opinion, but I've discovered research of my own. Her assessment of this consensus is incorrect. A Gallup poll was conducted on the scientist members of the Meteorlogical Society and the American Geophysical Society (the very people who study this for a living). Only 17% believe that humans are to blame for this. How can it be a settled issue when only 17% believe that humans to cause for it? Source #2: <http://www.ncpa.org/~ncpa/ba/gif/ba230b.gif> But where did your author get the source of this information? From the IPCC. The IPCC stands for "Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change". Governmental? As in, politicians who have personal gain to be made by fudging scientific data have formed this panel? This is where your beloved Naomi Oreskes gets her source of information from about this "consensus" from all these scientists. This is where you get you got your source for debate on this issue. Which source would you most likely question first on the consensus of scientists about Global Warming? Mine or yours? Still don't believe me? Have you ever heard of "The Oregon Petition"? This petition has over 19,000 signatures from scientists all over the world, which claim that there is no evidence for any global warming caused by man. Source #3: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_Petition> Now, if the humans are to blame for this, then that means we are capable of solving it, correct? Wrong again. Even if you could rely on information as old as 150 years old, you'll find that the largest part of our increase in CO2 levels in the atmosphere took place before 1940, long before we started emitting it ourselves. Nevermind the fact that water vapor is the #1 "green house gas". Not CO2. You and your cronnies continually ignore this fact as well. The point of all of this is that the issue is no where near dead, no where near settled and despite the arrogance of our society, we are still heavily uninformed and ignorant on what affects our climate has and what our impact on it is. Never in the thousands of years of science has any respectable policy ever been made on scientific information so raw and volatile. It is arrogant of you and anyone else to whole-heartedly believe that we are to blame for any warming trends, or that we are even in a warming trend. Anyone who decides to attack this politically and economically is doing so for their own gain and/or the gain of who share similar political and economical views. For someone who spent their entire life in education, you didn't seem to learn very much, Professor Slekar.
