October, 1995, is Gay and Lesbian History Month. To encourage gay and
lesbian people not to be afraid of who they are nor internalize the
condemnation of some in our society, October 11, 1995 will be celebrated
as National Coming Out Day.

Dignity/USA is an organization of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered
Catholics and their friends with approximately 4,000 members located in 85
Chapters nationwide. Dignity/USA has named the Sunday before National
Coming Out Day, October 8, 1995, Solidarity Sunday. We are inviting
family and friends from accross the United States to wear a short piece
of rainbow ribbon to show their solidarity with gays and lesbians and
opposition to continued "gay-abuse" on that day. We are asking
supportive members of Congress to issue a proclamation naming
October 8, 1995, as Solidarity Sunday throughout the United States.

Many of our society have targeted gays and lesbians for verbal and physical
assault. Ballot initiatives have been introduced in Colorado, Oregon, Idaho
and Maine to deny to us basic civil rights. Amendment 2 was passed by the
electorate in Colorado in 1994. This action was overturned by the Colorado
Supreme Court. That judgement will be heard by the United States Supreme
Court in October, ironically Gay/Lesbian History Month.

There are those in many parts of the United States who work to harm or even
demonize gays and lesbians. Strangely many religious ministers and owners
of television and radio ministries use anti-gay rhetoric to raise money.
Sadly, too frequently, verbal and religious abuse of gasy and lesbians
results in physical abuse and even murder. Eight men percived to be
gay were murdered in Texas in 1993-94. A recent issue of "Out
Magazine" reported that 161 men and women percieved to by gay
or lesbian were murdered in the United States in 1992-94. We believe
that it is time to call for an end to hatred and violence directed toward
gay and lesbian people.

Thank you for proclaming October 8, 1995, Solidarity Sunday.
