Once the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette called me two days in a row, asking
if I wanted to subscribe. The first time had me really ticked off
because the telemarketer didn't understand the word "no" -- I had to
say I was not interested three times before she finally understood. So the
second time, I decided to deliberately mishear the pitch from the new
telemarketer:
TM: Hello, Mr. Kantru -- Kantrow -- Kantroowutz,
MK: Kantrowitz.
TM: How are you today?
MK: Okay.
TM: That's wonderful. I'm calling on behalf of the Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette. We have a special offer for new subscribers.
MK: But I'm not interested in subscribing to the New York Times!
TM: (flustered -- this isn't going according to script) But, but, I'm
not calling from the New York Times.
MK: Then why did you say so? I'm not interested in subscribing to the
New York Times.
TM: I'm calling to see if you're interested in subscribing to the
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
MK: Didn't I just tell you that I'm not interested in subscribing to
the New York Times? I live in Pittsburgh, not New York. Why should
I want to read about what's happening in New York?
TM: Then you should be interested in subscribing to the Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette, since we report Pittsburgh news.
MK: Since when does the New York Times report Pittsburgh news? Didn't
you listen to what I said? I do not want to subscribe to the New
York Times.
TM: I am listening. I asked you about the Pittsburgh paper, not the
New York Times. (obviously very flustered here) Now do you want to
subscribe to the New York Times or not?
MK: Maybe. How much is a subscription to the New York Times?
TM: (realizing the error) I meant the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, sorry.
Now you have me confused.
MK: Well?
TM: Well, what?
MK: Well, how much does a subscription to the New York Times cost?
TM: How should I know?
MK: You're the one who's asking me if I want to subscribe or not.
TM: The PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE costs $2.50 a week delivered,
including Sunday!
MK: I don't want to subscribe to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. How much
is the New York Times?
TM: (made a very frustrated grunt and hanged up the phone)
