Well not a lot of sickies, but your chances of finding one by
advertising a free cat right before Halloween is substantial.
There are also folks who gather cats to sell for animal research.
Regardless of one's general position on animal research, it is
hard to think of your pet of 13 years in a tiny cage with tubes
and wires running everywhere.
You might try calling Animal Friends. They don't put cats to
sleep (unless the cats are in great pain and terminal anyhow),
and they have dozens of volunteers who pet the cats and let them
out to play.
You might call them to get advice on how to find a home for your
cat. Because they do not euthanize healthy animals, they usually
have a waiting list. Also, they run the only shelter that does
not take city money, so they appreciate people making every
effort before taking their pets to the shelter.
By the way, Animal Friends is an excellent place to get a well
adjusted cat or dog. While dogs in pet stores are shut up in
cages until someone buys them, these dogs are walked (usually
twice) every day, and the cats are tended to and domesticated by
continued affection. Many cats that are feral when they arrive
eventually become excellent pets.
