Nitin's message ...
I am writing to you to seek a small favor. Only thing I am asking you to do is
make a phone call to a local senator and forward this message to every
immigrant friend and sympathizer you know via e-mail, word-of-mouth, US mail,
fax etc. We are trying to convince the senators to support a bill (S2385)
which will alleviate the suffering lot of us first generation immigrants go
through. Only way we can achieve this is if everyone take some time to call
their senators and express their support to the bill S2385.
Your call or letter is worth much more than the rest of us if you are from Ohio
Delaware, Iowa, Colorado, Utah, Alabama, Wisconsin, Vermont or Pennsylvania.
One senator from each of these states is on the Senate Judiciary Committee
which is going to decide the fate of this bill soon. The phone numbers of the
Senate Judiciary Committee members are given later in this message.
It is going to take up to 4 years for the spouses and kids of permanent
residents of the USA to get their own green cards. If the spouses and kids are
living abroad then in most cases their non-immigrant (tourist/student) visa
applications are routinely denied. This results in the separation of newly
married couples and separation of kids from one of their parents. Every
politician is talking about family values these days. Let's all call them and
ask them if their views are same for immigrants' families also. If yes, then
they should support the senate bill S2385.
The senate bill S2385 was introduced this year due to lot of effort put in by
the volunteers of an organization called Professional for Spouse Reunification
(PSR). This bill proposes that the spouses and kids should not be denied the
non-immigrant visa just because they are intending immigrants. This bill also
proposes a penalty if spouses and kids stay here illegally. Currently, there is
no penalty for staying here illegally. Thus the bill promotes legal immigration
and discourages illegal immigration. The spouses and kids won't be eligible
for work permits or any government benefits, thus, they won't be any burden on
the US economy. Most importantly, the bill won't increase the total number of
immigrants admitted to the USA as only those spouses & kids whos green card has
been approved will be eligible for the non-immigrant visa.
When millions of people come to the USA every year on non-immigrant visas, why
can't they allow 200,000 spouses and kids to come to their eventual home? You
can help solve this inhumane separation of married couples by just making one
phone call to your local senators. And also, please forward this message to
every immigrant friend and sympathizer you know so that we can reach more and
more people. Please don't put this message on any network, somebody else will
be doing similar campaign using the networks.
Phone Numbers of Senate Judiciary Committee members.
