6:00 pm-7:00 pm Lecture
7:00 pm-8:00 pm Reception
Graduate School of Public Health Auditorium
G23 Parran Hall 130 De Soto Street, Pittsburgh

This lecture+reception event offers an exciting and unique opportunity to learn
about Emergency and meet Dr. Gino Strada, its founder.

Established in 1994, Emergency is a private, independent non-governmental
organization (NGO), dedicated to providing medical, surgical and humanitarian
support to civilian war victims. To this end, Emergency builds and runs
hospitals, physical and social rehabilitation centers, first aid posts and
health centers for basic medical assistance.

In addition, Emergency sets up development projects in the countries where it
operates and trains national staff to meet highly professional standards.

The organization currently operates in Afghanistan, Algeria, Cambodia, Iraq,
Palestine, Sierra Leone, and Sudan.

It has been present in Iraq since 1995, where it has established 2 surgical
centers (a third center is presently under construction in Kerbala), three
rehabilitation and social reintegration centers, a pediatric burn unit, an adult
burn unit, a spinal unit and 22 first aid posts.

Emergency's operations in Afghanistan began in 1999. The organization currently
operates two surgical centers (a third one is presently under construction in
Laskhar-gah), 23 public health clinics and first aid posts, a prison program,
and a pediatric and maternity center.

Taking care of civilian war victims is an important issue, but, sadly, it often
forgotten or "avoided" by the media. All too often the so-called "liberation
wars" leave a trail of pain and suffering behind, but the press or TV rarely
spend more than a few words on it.

Emergency is a world renown humanitarian organization that provides medical
support to civilian war victims and operates hospitals and maternity centers in
Cambodia, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan and Iraq. They are opening a Maternity
Center in Panshir, Afghanistan.

Emergency's founder and Peace Nobel nominee, Dr. Gino Strada, will be in
Pittsburgh on January 21, as a invited lecturer at the University of Pittsburgh
Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH) and meet with city leaders and local
non-profit organizations.

Here are the details of the lecture at GSPH:
