The term "Spam" allegedly refers to the way that a certain
canned meat product allegedly looks, when it is thrown against a
wall. This is an experiment which I have not personally conducted.

In popular Internet usage, the term "Spam" refers to any
message that is cross-posted to numerous newsgroups, or one which
is not relevant to those newsgroups where it is posted. It also
sometimes refers to any post of a commercial nature.

As a couple of previous posts in this thread have already
mentioned, there is also a great song about Spam by Monty Python.

In fact, having just finished an article on the etymology of spam in the net
context, as best as my research has been able to determine, the Month Python Spam
skit is the origin of the net usage of spam. Apparently, the premise was, if people
kept doing this to USENET, all the good stuff would be gone and everywhere you
looked there would be nothing but the horrifyingly ubiquitous...SPAM!!!!!

My one gripe was that Hormel wouldn't issue an official statement about this new use
of the term <sigh>

Then why are you posting to regional newsgroups in the Philadelphia,
Atlanta, San Francisco Bay Area, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston, New England,
Nevada, New York City, Pittsburgh, and Sacramento areas?

Not to mention that at _least_ one of the newsgroups doesn't welcome
personal ads, period. (Its FAQ has been mailed.)

(Folks - please read the newsgroups header, and set followups if you
can when it is as massively crossposted as this. Thanks.)

Follows reset to chi.personals.

Wow, Mike!

Out of all the newsgroups you posted to looking for a Chicago woman,
not a single one was actually a CHICAGO group! Or even an Illinois
group for that matter! Not even a St. Louis group! Or ANY group
pertaining to a midwestern city!

Congratulations, you win the coveted atl.singles Golden Nothing
award!

Wow Robbie, you and I must be tied for the "Nothing Better To Do With
Your Time Award": you win the category for hassleling a guy trying to
meet girls, and I for wasting my time writing to a stupid bitch like
you.

Yeah, its my real name.
