I was wondering what people's opinion was about the new book Prayer of
the City by the Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Buzz Bissinger.

Basically, Bissinger followed Mayor Rendell around for a year and wrote
about what he saw. I'm a lukewarm Rendell supporter (I think he's done
a few things well, a lot of things acceptably, and some things pretty
poorly) but I have the feeling that Bissinger's book is fascinating but
pretty deceptive. I've read about half, but I just can't put my finger
on why I don't quite trust what I read.

I think Bissinger is honestly saying what he thinks he sees, but I can't
quite believe his version of events hasn't been polished a little too
much -- not so much for reasons of agenda, as for making things fit into
some neat themes.

I think a lot of the reason Bissinger did this is from his newspaper
background, where the emphasis is on leads and headlines and getting
points across quickly and directly. Instead, a book ought to be about
exploring ideas, showing ambiguity, and asking questions. Of course, I
haven't read the entire book yet, so I could be prejudging him a little
too much.
