I think sayings refering to people becoming more conservative with age is
really aimed at the many people who go to college and get swept up in the
liberal flurry that always seems to be going on at campuses like mine.
Many of the most intense liberal activists on my campus came here as
quiet, moderate individuals.  These, I think, are people with week minds
who will probably react and become conservative when they hit the real
world.  (i.e. when they are left alone and realize other people were
telling them what to think for four years)

Anyway, they certainly don't account for every Democrat there is.  There's
no way the Democratic party would be as popular as it is if all it had was
a few young, week-minded fools.  I am a moderate Republican myself, but
I am convinced that both parties have a fairly intelligent, large core
surrounded by a layer of jerks (like the professors you mention below...)
