I haven't been able to read news.admin for a while so forgive me for asking potentially stupid questions. Background: Xenix386 Bnews2.11P17 BBS and Utility machine for The Philadelphia Area Computer Society. Maybe it's the hour. (Oh God not another one of those posts!) Maybe it's how long I've been staring at these little blue letters. Did ya ever get the feeling? Everything was running SO WELL!... This is going to be a long one. I'll get it all out of my system in one swell foop. Please nobody tell me to go get Cnews? Please? I just noticed news unbatching from king.mcs.drexel.edu. "king" to our little Xenix386 box. Then I noticed all the news spooled up to go to king. Nobody but king is sending us this much news right now. That made me sit up. Not much could at this hour. Ok, no biggie. Bnews thinks news is coming in from king.mcs.drexel.edu not king. Why am I nervous? Why? Because the more I think about it the more it seems like we got a problem. I can't just change everything to king.mcs.drexel.edu or the filenames will get too long. Do they truncate and assume no collisions? How would HDB Systems files take to a domain type name? No way, SHere=king not king.mcs.drexel.edu! And that is just the beginning. If you are here so far and are saying, "The jerk, all he has to do is..." then DON'T GO AWAY! I have been doing this for a few years and have never had to deal with an actual connection to an machine that 1) Isn't registered with the rutgers mapping project and 2) Sends us mail via MX name server? How do I tell them how to list me in "The maps(tm)"? Will drexel!pacs work? Should I just send mail or call the guy listed in drexel's map as poster? (If you know this specifically, get in touch with myself and if you need details on your end get in touch with mcain@king) I can't muck about with the politics. I just have to publish a map entry and catch hell if the mail doesn't get through. Thanks for name serving us, whomever you are. I did get mail through by sending outside!drexel!pacs or was it outside!drexel!king!pacs. When I tried to verify it recently it bounced at vu-vlsi saying it didn't know drexel. Back to the news problem. I am running Bnews2.11 Patch level 17. I need to know where I can ftp Patch 18 and 19. If you know how to stop the news from doing the unnecessary loop back to king please have it in my mailbox when I wake up. I know there were more questions... Oh yes, If this gets to you by a long path and you are close by and you are a phl uucp site and can Poll pacs I'd like to tighten up the pha/pa web. We are a not for profit educational society very into telecom and computers. However we have to pay measured business rate for our phone lines and policy has been not to call out. I'm sure "The powers that be" will ok a Poll here or there. We have close to 100 Meg free space in the news spool and we expire at 14 days. Wanna help fill it up? :-) -- AJB N3JQB +1 215 785 6644 UUCP:rescon!bud Quote:"If you lose your memory, forget it!" bud@pacs.pha.pa.us Proverb:"The sooner you get behind, the longer you have to catch up."

Many thanks to those who responded to my cry for help Last friday at <mumble>:AM in the morning. I lost some of the response and so am posting to thank those whose replies I never got to read and cannot thank via E-mail. I was surprised to hear from Henry Spencer since I had posted the article with a phl Distribution expecting local help. The first group was (is) phl.misc and news.admin was tacked on to the end to get the admins attention on those local machines. Thank you Henry. You have answered my cries before. I should have known this one but blocked it due to lack of necessity "back then". Henry writes: >In article <721@rescon.UUCP> you write: >>... Please nobody tell me to go get Cnews? Please? >> >>I just noticed news unbatching from king.mcs.drexel.edu. "king" to >>our little Xenix386 box. Then I noticed all the news spooled up >>to go to king. And I'm afraid the answer is probably going to be >the one you asked people not to tell you... I don't think B News ever >did get the feature needed to cope with this right (although I lost track >of B News changes around 2.11 and may have missed it). [ details deleted ] > Henry Spencer at U of Toronto Zoology > henry@zoo.toronto.edu utzoo!henry I knew they came out with the 18 and 19 patches to bring the Bnews to compatibilty with Cnews but never knew the details. After setting up trn I noticed the "Skipping unavailable article" message on empty newsgroups. I wrote to Wayne Davison thinking that the last patch to trn would help but he explained the Cnews and up-to-date Bnews convention of setting the low article number 1 higher than the high article number to indicate an empty group rather than a group with one article in it. I really like trn and this one bother was outweighed 100 times by the + command. :-) Bob, Internet: kupiec@hp800.lasalle.edu (or) bob%olwejo@cs.widener.edu writes: >Why are you still messing with Bnews? Normally I would have said because I know it so well but after this embarrasing situ... Things are set up so even when I was gone due to a recent family crisis the machine kept on working the whole time while people scratched their heads and said "What do we do?" Security? I woke up to find all of these goodies in my mailbox and quickly fixed the sys file. The next morning at around 3am I watched the news come in. Hallalulia!
