I had some poor experiences with GE a few years back as well.  The prices
are on the high side, but the thing that makes it seem so extremely
expensive is that you have to pay all the money up front.  

In my opinion, if you want to meet other people, GE and services like it
are not the way to go.  Join a health club, take classes through Leisure
Learning (that's the company here in Houston that offers cooking classes,
etc. that meet once or twice), and atleast here in Houston there are a
boat load of "single" organizations, church groups, etc.  If you're going
to spend money on something, spend it on something you know you enjoy
doing already.  More likely than not, you'll meet someone who also enjoys
the same thing.  After all, unless its free, chances are that the other
person also enjoys it, otherwise they wouldn't pay for it.  With dating
services, and especially GE, people can say and write anything they want
about themselves.  Its only later you find out what their true interest
are.  

I know with GE, I belonged to them for nearly 4 years.  I got 4 dates as a
result.  At approximately $2000 for the membership, that comes out to
$500/date.  Not a good investment.  I've spent far less than that pursuing
activities I enjoy, and have met many more women in the process.
