I can't believe anyone would pay that much.   Even $500 sounds way out of 
the park.

A couple people who work at my company went out to a video dating service 
locally and only had to spend 50 bucks or so to get on file -- and they 
got calls.

I can't imagine spending any more than that on something so unlikely to
succeed even under the best of circumstances.  Christ, you can take out
personal ads in the paper for a few bucks an issue.  Some of them are even
free to the advertiser. 

And the costs of doing a dating service -- even if one tries to do some
sort of statistical matching or video cutting -- are pretty low, it
doesn't seem like you'd have to charge all that much to make a decent
business of it. 

It never ceases to amaze me how many people will be duped into paying 
huge amounts of money for such trivial services.
