To continue with my account of the Spring'96 Convention of the
Motor Bus Society, held at the Holiday Inn, in Cherry Hill, N.J., here
goes:
We left the hotel Sunday morning, April 14, with 2 buses;first,
a Gray Line New York MCI 102DL3, numbered G5902, along with the Bur-
lington Transit bus we had on Saturday,T6H5308A 9553(an ex-New York
Bus Service bus). We headed over the Ben Franklin Bridge to Philadel-
phia, then, to Front and Market Streets, where we were met by Tom Col-
lins of SEPTA, along with articulated Volvo B10M 7011. We were given
special Transpasses,(except yours truly, who used his own)which we used
on the bus. We first went to Wissahickon Loop, where we saw a Novabus
low-floor demonstrator, which was numbered 9901, and where it was going
into service on SEPTA Route 38. From there, we went to Allegheny Depot,
in North Philadelphia, wehere we looked at the buses and facilities.
We then boarded Volvo 40' B10M 8590, again using the special Transpass
most of us were given(see above for how your cybercorrespondent was
equipped). From there, we went to SEPTA's Midvale Facility, where we
saw the new bus garage being built(to replace Luzerne Depot as an oper-
ating facility), along with some derelict vehicles. After this, we
went back to Front and Market, and left the SEPTA buses.
After returning to our touring buses, we went to Krapf's Coaches,
of West Chester, Pa., and saw the buses assigned by SEPTA to the Route
202 bus, along with a low-floor Neoplan(the first delivered by Neoplan
to an operator east of the Mississippi River), and some old RTS buses
owned by Krapf's, as well as some of their MCI cruisers. From there,
we went to lunch, then to the Philadelphia International Airport, to
drop off some of our party, then headed to U.S. Coach Sales, where we
saw various old buses, including a TG2706, dating to 1942, as well as
an old Mack C41-GT, serial #4060, possibly an ex-Philadelphia bus, as
well as an old Red Arrow Lines bus numbered 81, a 1950 TDH4509.
That was our last stop. We returned to the Holiday Inn, and
went our seperate ways, after our farewells. Before I go, I'd like to
thank all parties for the convention, as well as Charlie Sullivan, for
his MBS efforts.(As usual, these are my own views-this should not be
interpreted as an official communication of the Motor Bus Society.)
