You aren't serious, are you? What, do we have to rate _everything_
for the lowest common denominator? Don't you think that most people
are capable of figuring this out for themselves, and don't need a
rating system to spell it out for them?

That is a truly pathetic proposal, Leon.

There are already guidelines to prevent car advertisers making an
issue of the performance of their cars. And some people sad enough to
complain when they feel the guidelines have been broken.

I suppose you're referring to unlawful claims about a product, consumer
protection, etc. I was actually talking about Bad Driving scenes in BOTH
commercials and movies, cartoons, etc.	So my proposal is to have them
rated (not unlike Adult Language, Nudity, Violence). No consumer
protection from the law here: we need grassroots voluntary stuff here,
responding to the concern that we're breeding a new generation or road
ragers and aggressive drivers.

Let's be specfic: what I mean by "bad driving" or "aggressive driving"
is the portrayal of stunts and dangerous situations that aren't real, but
to children, it looks real and weakens their resolve to be good drivers.
Don't you think that's really important? Some examples I saw recently:

Subaru: strange looking stuntmen junmp on the speeding vehicle driven by
a cowboy, and the men look inside and say something inane like, "Is this
a leather seat?" etc. Another shows a kid driving a car in circles with
a fiendish look on his face. These are BDs. Another common one in
movies where the car is actually pulled and the driver is pretending to
drive, meanwhile taking the eyes off the road for up to 20 secs.!!

Remember the Safeway ad with Molly in the car thinking about cheap
tomatoes or something? There were *hundreds* who spotted that her seat
belt wasn't done up correctly and complained (I got this from one who
thought she would be the only one calling in, and was surprised to be
told the phones had been jammed for a week).

I, for one, wish to do *nothing* which would have the effect of reducing
The World to the level of comprehension exhibited by children.

Nope. I mean that there are guidelines to prevent advertisers saying

'Our new car is really jolly fast, and rather good fun to punt down a
twisty road'.

You have to say

'Our new car is very safe when overtaking lorries at 50 mph, and has
driver passenger and side airbags. This means that you can drive like
a complete dickhead without risking getting your cranium opened. In
fact, the whole car is an airbag, which inflates the moment you get
into it, thus making sure that you don't hurt yourself.'

Good for you! We need to let them know that we care about stuff like
that. First there was Sex and Violence--we got ratings. Now I'm hearing
pressure building up to do it for cigarette smoking being made glamorous
in movies. BD ("Bad Driving " scenes) is next!!
