I thought admirers and customers of Powell's bookstore in Portland might
enjoy this anecdote:
I ordered a slew of Powell's gift certificates for friends and relatives in
Portland, which they mailed to me (as I live in Seattle), over the phone.
When the package containing the gift certificates arrived, I discovered that
it also contained (besides several Powell's bookmarks) a business card for
Powell's Technical Bookstore, elegantly embossed with the name of the store,
address and phone numbers. In the are on the card where the employee's name
and title are printed was printed:
FUP
Store Cat
----
Well, I have about 23 other reasons for liking Powell's; but it's always
nice to have a friend in the executive wing.
"I'm a simple man,
Hobbes."
"You? Yesterday you
wanted a nuclear powered
car that could turn into
a jet with laser-guided
heat-seeking missiles!"
"I'm a simple man with
complex tastes."

Seems quite mellow. The store itself is OK, but isn't really in the same class as Stacey's or Computer Literacy in the Bay Area.

It's good to see the Fup the store cat is still around. I haven't been into
their new building, but at their old address she/he used to wander the store
and sit on the window sills and watch the world go by. Cute kitty.

In Seattle, there's a used bookstore in the U district called Beauty and the Books that has 4 black and white store cats. They sell a great t-shirt with the cats on it. My favorite store cat, however, is the cat that lives in a certain antique store in Tacoma. I watched this cat calmly wander over to a Victorian sofa (which was not in great shape to begin with), stretch, then proceed to sharpen its claws on the side. ------ Debbie Schwartz // das@voodoo.ca.boeing.com // ....uw-beaver!bcsaic!voodoo!das
