I attended a very informative meeting yesterday in Harrisburg, PA. The SAS Institute sponsored the presentations and the local Sales and Technical Marketers provided the information. Daryl R. Hoffman The Pennsylvania State University Center for Academic Computing Senior Applications Programmer/Analyst email: drh4@email.cac.psu.edu Resource Administration office: (814) 865-0845 fax: (814) 863-7049 The presentation dealt with SAS 6.08 and the new features added to allow managers and applications programmers to best utilize the many different parts of the SAS System for Information Delivery. The demonstration included SAS/ASSIST, SAS/AF and FSP and also showed the new product for object-oriented programming, SAS/EIS. The on-line demonstration allowed us to see first hand how the SAS System could be used to move data from the mainframe to the PC and back. The Technical Rep was using EXTRA! to allow for the Async connection to the MVS platform at SAS Institute in Cary. The response time was fairly good for 9600 and the two sessions running under Windows and on the mainframe simultaneously seemed rather clean. SAS/CONNECT was the tool used to transfer the data sets between the client and the server. Overall the presentation was very good and if you get a chance to have SAS bring this to your group or to attend a similar informational meeting don't pass it up. There was no talk of sales, unless if occurred offline with the marketing rep. I can't wait for the new AF Frame entries coming with SAS 6.08. There is also a Query selection added to SAS/ASSIST in 6.08, which uses PROC SQL to generate queries against your data sets or tables. For those of you in the Harrisburg area, SAS will be returning in September and is asking for suggested topics for their presentations. Information will be sent out at a later time. (Promo off !)
