     Your grandfather was right, it *is* pronounced Gah-lic, tho' for some 
reason many Canadians -- even Cape Bretoners who may know native speakers 
there -- pronounce it the Irish way, Gay-lick, which to me sounds very 
unhygienic as well as garlicky.
