In article <513r11$k90@lyorn.mdd.comm.mot.com>, robinson@mdd.comm.mot.com (Jim Robinson) writes: >In article <511beg$8cg@ns.RezoNet.NET>, Jacques Ferron wrote: >> >>The Qubec Government is giving anglophones English-language schools, TV, >>papers, movie houses, hospitals and government services, which is a heck of a >>lot more than francophones get in any other province. Then it asks "But >>we want you guys to extend us the same courtesy and cool it with the >>English-only signs, at least in public". And some nut decides that this is >>comparable to Auschwitz and the Qubcois are nazis, and posts it for all the >>world to see! > >FWIW, I agree that the Nazi comparison is ludicrous. I certainly don't >like Quebec's sign laws (past and present), but to equate Quebec with >Nazi Germany insults those who suffered truly unspeakable horrors. > I agree, and I disagree Jim. I mean, the Nazis were the worst xenophobes we've ever seen in the 20th century (and perhaps throughout human history)- and to compare Quebec's current policies with those of Nazi Germany is not only historically inaccurate, but it is also fundamentally wrong. HOWEVER, this disturbing trend to place priority on the majority rule principle is disturbingly familiar with MANY societies which used it to abuse minorities. This comes into play when, following a LEGAL boycott of stores, and achieving LEGAL bilingual signs, it is inferred on this group that the Anglophones of Quebec have outraged the Francophone minority, and will, as a result, see their rights under bill 86, revoked. It doesn't say that Quebecers are "Nazis," or "xenophobes" per se....but rather that Quebec is permitting a system, which lends itself to excesses, to run every aspect of it's interactive life. Such a decision, as has been seen in ancient Rome, Salem, Nazi Germany, etc....can have pretty severe and unfair consequences.
