ON YOUR BIKE TO PHILLIPS EDINBURGH SALE OF CYCLES AND CYCLING EPHEMERA ON 26TH AUGUST The story of the bicycle is one of invention, both of the machines themselves and of their history. Many claims have been made for the invention of the bicycle - even Leonardo da Vinci has been credited with the honour - but most have been discredited in recent years. Today, historians are generally agreed that the inventor was Karl von Drais of Mannheim, who patented his design in 1817. But the inventor of the crank and pedal machine was Pierre Lallement, who patented his design after emigrating to America in 1866. Almost any cycle from the 19th century is collectable today, no matter what the condition. If you have a Boneshaker, a Hobbyhorse, a Pennyfarthing, an Elswick truss frame or something you cannot even identify, then Phillips will value it free. Valuation Days have already taken place across the country to find items to be sold in Edinburgh at the first ever Sale of Cycles and Cycling Ephemera by an international auction house. This will take place on Saturday 26th August and Phillips will continue to accept entries to the sale until the end of July. The sale will include anything which relates to cycling, including old cycling posters, early pumps, books, trophies, lamps and other ephemera.
