Yes, for the most part, that is true, but the effects is much more subtle
profound than simply a case of whether or not (specifically not) there is
any interaction through the rear of the tweeter or not. The radiation load
presented to the tweeter mounted on a baffle that must also hold a woofer or
two is very different than one which is just big enough to hold the tweeter
itself. (note I said different, not worse or better).

The primary advantages of an "acoustimass" subwoofer system (a specific
implementation of what is referred to as a bandpass enclosure) is that the
upper end crossover is purely acoustic, not electrical, which has the advantage
of filtering out spurious output generated by the driver itself in addition to
the normal program material. As such, the acoustic crossover is far, far
cheaper and easier to implement than an electrical network at the same
frequency. It's also much easier to control in manufacturing.

By-the-by, if any of you rec.audio readers are also interested in the ultimate
in Alpine profiles, stop by and take a look at the curves I took of a Bose
AM-5 system. Pretty saddening and sobering at once!
