Babies on bikes

In the new year I am possibly going to be faced with the problem of
transporting a baby to nursery. I am wondering about the possibility of
carrying him on my bicycle, a distance of perhaps 2->2.5 miles through
moderate suburban traffic.

For a while at least, I assume he will be too young (5 months or so) to use
any kind of toddler seat. Are there any alternatives? And what would be the
safety implications of carrying him in a sling or "backpack" such as I might
use if walking?

Please email responses, since I'm afraid I don't read this newsgroup
regularly.

Robert.

I don't really think that ANY form of having the child up on the bike
with you is that safe. If you fall over, that's an awfully high fall
for something that fragile. I know kids a fairly tough but the thought
of a kid's head hitting the pavement after a four or five foot fall even
with a helmet is not very pleasent.

I should think trailers are more safe. But I'm sure SOMEONE out there
has some stats on this.
