I have bought suet from a local store that the birds just won't touch. Since it was on sale, I bought many packets. Anybody got a recipe that will allow me to make my own suet? I know peanut butter and the addition of different kinds of feed will help. Any birders got some receommendations? k.

I guarantee the squirrels will take care of it all quite neatly. > Anybody got a recipe that will allow me to make my own suet? I believe you just render beef fat and then mix it with whatever else you desire. This can be peanut butter, birdseed, cut up fruit pieces, etc. I've heard that peanut butter works quite well. You can also avoid making cakes. I've seen people take an old 2x4, drill holes in it and fill these up with the suet concoction. Then they just lean it against their house. We keep meaning to try this, but my husband and I just haven't been ambitious enough to buy the wood and drill the holes! April G.

I get beef fat from the butcher and render it or you can use lard. I mix- 1 part lard/fat/suet 1 part crunchy peanut butter 1 part corn flour What ever seeds I have. Usually waste-not variety that is shelled seeds. Birds stand on top of each other to eat it! There are 30+ bushtits forming a suet eating machine on my feeder at it as I type. Glenn BTW - Do a WWW search on dogpile.com or google.com and you will find lots of recipes! If you have any artistic ability, carefully craft the suet into the shape of a nice, expensive, freshly-washed motor vehicle and birds will be all over it in no time! -- Steve M, Atlanta

It wouldn't happen to be the apple flavor, would it? That's the only one my birds would never eat. I make my suet concoction by combining crisco (or off-brand), crunchy peanut butter, and stone-ground cornmeal. Same stuff I use to make cornbread. I've added dates, raisins, pecans, and various other nuts or fruits. Also, if you have some nutty/fruity cereal that's gone stale, add it. As long as it's wholesome stuff, not sugary. I mix in roughly 1 part fat, 1 part peanut butter, 1-2 parts meal. Just note that once it gets warm out, depending on where you live, the fat may melt. Here in the SE US, I switch to suet dough for the warmer months, or else all that fat would be dripping in the 90 to 100 degree swelter. I don't have a recipe for suet DOUGH vs. plain suet blocks, does anyone else? Set a birdbath nearby and ALWAYS drop some water in it. A consistent source of drinking water is essential. Alot depends on the type of bird, but consitstency is your best bet. Just like the darn cat :-) NC
