Forwarded post by Barry Kent McKay ---------------- Edited press release TORONTO, Sept. 6, 1996 ... Brookfield LePage Management Ltd. of Toronto is the first Canadian real estate management services company to launch a comprehensive "Safe Flight" program to save many of the thousands of birds that die each year from colliding with buildings during migration season. "Up to 100 species of migrating and insect-eating birds collide with more tha 150 lit buildings, towers and signs in downtown Toronto each night," says John Campbell, president, Eastern Canada Group, Brookfield LePage Management Ltd. [Note from Barry...the largest strike I've experienced in the Toronto area in one night was 1,600 birds, at a TV broadcast tower long since taken down....about one third still alive that we could rescue]. "We are initially committed to implementing this Safe Flight program in Toronto, starting with the landmark property BCE Place, then rolling it out with the help of our clients, tenants and employees, to buildings we manage that are in migratory bird flyways." The program focuses on ensuring that lights are turned off from dusk until dawn during the peak migration seasons - in the spring (mid-April to early June) and fall (mid-August to late October). Says Kathi Bonner, Safe Flight Program coordinator, "We are asking our tenants, employees and visitors to seek alternatives to bright night lighting, substituting lower wattage lighting, to choose alternatives to overhead lighting such as desk lamps and to draw blinds or curtains whenever possible." ______________ The media release goes on to say that the company will seek to minimize night lighting in all its properties and mainatin an information camaign through a variety of communication methods aimed at tenants and employees. Brookfield LePage has properties in big cities across North America. Why not e-mail them a thanks at: teg@inforamp.net
