Hi,
I want to repaint my 12ft tinny. It's a Mirrocraft, Basic Rivited
Cartopper (on a trailer, actually). It's painted an ugly green, and banged
up a bit.

What kind of paint should I use? Spray-paint? some kind of enamel?

If the ugly green is in good shape, and covers all, then you have most of
the battle won. Sand any flaws and prime with Zinc Cromate primer any bare
aluminum. Go to your local auto paint store and see what they recommend.
My Jetcraft was repainted with IGC brand, but your local automotive paint
store will be able to recommend what is available in your area.

Thanks! That's kinda what I was thinking. Some local folks are
recommending Tremclad, but I'll talk to my local auto shops and see what
they recommend.

Tremclad with a special primer will work! I found Beni Moore's metal paint
way better than trem clad ..but you'll still need to use a special primer!!!

I personally would not use the Tremclad. It is an excellent paint, but to
make it work to resist rust on steel, it is a much softer paint then most
enamels, it will scratch and abrade off easily. Since corrosion really
isn't the concern on aluminum like it is steel, using the aforementioned zc
primer (or the newer environmentally friendly aluminum primers) and any
decent paint will work. The better the paint and pre-prep, the better the
final appearance (and higher the cost). Brushed on 'top sides' paint works
well, sprayed on CIL automotive paints with hardeners would look fabulous if
you have a gun and some experience..

I just completed painting my 16' Mirrocraft Lake Fisherman. I turned it
upside down on some saw horses, sanded it with 220 grit, primed it with an
epoxy self etching zinc/chromate primer, then with Interlux easypoxy. It
came out fantastic. CAUTION, WEAR A DUAL CANNISTER MASK.
