Hi gang.

First, excuse my english, a am french speaking.

I am in the process of buying a boat.

It is a bruce roberts design all in steel. She was launch in 1982. The
hule is in verry good shape, the interior is 1982...... Brown plywood,
green carpet... :(

My concern is the motor. The builder have convert a International
Harvester fier pump motor into a marin motor. The engine is a *** 1968
**** UD282 model. Since it was instaled in 1982, it have accumulated 1
400 h.

What do you think about the motor ? If it was not having concern with
the engine, i will buy the boat for 15 000$ CDN

I really nead your imput. Thank you.

Sylvain

If the engine runs, it can be rebuilt for a reasonable cost,
especially if you can change the rings and get the crank reground,
if that's what it needs. So long as you can find parts. An engine
manual may become the most important part of the boat.

Most mechanics would be your buddy for a hundred bucks a day, free
ride and a couple of beers. With an enthusistic helper such as
yourself, a rebuild can go very fast, except for the crank grind,
cylinder liners and head planing. Has it had a real rebuild in the
past? Is there enough left of the head and crank and cylinder
liners to re-machine?

1400 h does not seem so bad, it depends on how well it was
maintained, how hard it was used. Check the compression. Listen to
the valves and bearings with a stethescope. Get an experienced
mechanic to listen to it. Pressurise the cooling system to see if it
leaks into the oil pan.

Bite the bullet and get the engine checked by a pro. You are going
to want to service the engine after you buy it, does it seem wise to
pull it before you buy? If it needs big repairs, will the seller
help with the costs? Better a 200 dollar rejection than a 3000
dollar replacement, eh?
