Remote Steering for Kicker

Looking for some feedback on the the remote steering systems that are
used for steering trolling motor from main steering wheel. I've seen two
types.
One ties the legs together with steel linkage. The other connects the
the main motor with trolling motor from the front of the motors, also
using steel linkages.
Thanks for the help.

I have one which connects my 90 to my 6 HP 4 stroke kicker. They connect
from the front. There is a little ball mounted on each motor and a steel rod
with a spring tensioned nob secures it. Goes on and off easy.

Works great. Just set your speed (at the kicker) and direction. The big
motor being lined up with the little one helps alot with control.

Issues.
1) the clip that they mount can make the kicker motor hard or impossible to
tilt up if you have a motor lock since the ball mount device may hit the
lock. I had to change from the bar lock mechanism to a locking screw.
2) watch for your gas and control cables coming between the control rod and
anything hard (like the boat itself). You can pinch or squeeze your gas line
or other cables. I make sure I have those cables free and over top the rod
when I connect. I have made the mistake of doing it the other way ... :-)
3) changing speed. I still have to go back to the motor to change the speed.
This happens lots if it is windy and the boat starts to turn in the wind
since you need to gun it to fix the boat position and then go back to slow
speed. Can be annoying. If you fish with a friend he can adjust the speed
for you using advanced voice commands :-). Another buddy of mine has same
setup but with a power control stick up front (on an 8 4-stroke) and it
works nice.

Good luck,
John

Hey John
Thanks for your response.
Can you tell us what was the brand name and approximate cost of your
auxiliary steering unit.

I just bought one of those extension handles that allow me to steer from the
back seat and still am able to adjust speed . I find with reversing and
changing speed for wind and current I have more control with an extension
handle. Fits on easily . Prefer the straight handle over the hinged which is
weak and breaks. Disadvantage of the straight is that you may have to lean
out on sharp turns. Of course if you are trolling that sharply than maybe
you should be using an electric and slowing down

Thought about a steering assist so that I could use the wheel, but the
throttle remote and shifter remote is too complicated and expensive.

I have a hinged extension and can't imagine using a straight one. The
u-joint is plenty strong for the forces applied.
