I have an OLD Kerosene heater (probably 20 years old). It's got a large, flat brown base (fuel tank) with a white column rising from it. In the column, there's a large (3") diameter circle of wick. It's started by a coil powered by 2 D-cells. It's been reliable and warm all it's life, but the wick is getting burnt to the point where it's very hard to start and the flame takes ages to get around the circle. Can I replace the wick, or otherwise "resurrect" it? Are new ones of the same style available? Where? I believe I got mine from the famous but burned-down Payne Hardware in North Van (moment of silence...). I like the design - any comments on it vs other designs of kerosene heaters? Check out one of your local stores that stock kerosene heaters. They normally have replacement wicks and may be able to cross reference one for you. You could always pull your wick out (now that doesn't sound right) and take what is left to the store and match one up. Took it apart yesterday, and managed to get the wick up a bit, so I could cut off the burned part and still have some dangling in the kerosene. Works fine now! Thanks for the help. How well does your wick heater work? I have often wondered why there are no vented kerosene wick heaters for sale today. They are simple, quiet, and no pressurized fuel. Maybe they don't put out much heat? Maybe they smell bad and smoke? What has been your experience with the wick heater? Thanks! They put out LOTS of heat, they're easy to start (once I'd trimmed the wick), but they do smell a little. But I think the main problem is safety. My heater has a HUGE base to keep it from tipping over, and a "tilt switch" that trips a spring-loaded sheath that comes down (loud!) and snuffs out the flame if the heater is jarred or tipped. It's kind of a pain on a boat, though - it trips with every biggish wave. But with a bit of common sense, I can't see that they're any more dangerous than a propane heater.
