Dammit, why don't they make fishing rods that float? (I could tell the story,
but I'm guessing most of you can figure it out...)

Hmmm... sounds like a problem more easily attacked than the instantly
infamous inflatable dock.

Heh. Back in '84 or so, I had just purchased my first boat and borrowed
some of my father's gear to go fishing, including a brand new Ugly
Stik and 113h reel. We were jigging for bluefish 1/2 mile outside Fire
Island inlet when I laid my rod against the gunnel, with the jig still in
the water. Of course, a blue hit it then, and it went in the drink before
I could grab it.

What makes the story interesting is that a year or so later, a friend of
mine told me that he had snagged something while trolling, reeled it up,
and found.... a crusty looking Ugly Stik with a crusty 113h reel.

Oh, if it makes you feel any better, I lost a crab pot last
weekend. Guess I set it in an area with too steep a bottom slope. Sad
thing is, I actally watched the float go under. If I had noticed it was
sinkin just 20 seconds earlier, I could have caught it.

Check out the Blakemore Rod Floater at http://www.basspro.com
item number 38-581-132-08 is one size and color.

Also used to be a thing with a little float and a string that released
if it got wet.

Good question, Maybe because it would lower sales.

OTOH I can now recognize the sound of many objects hitting the water.
Fishing rods go Ssffffiitttt, Starting batteries go thunnk!!!, Eye
glasses go spishhhhss, Keys are harder to discribe as it is a
combination of the eye glass spishhhss with a metal jingle/ring, :-)

You gotta get in the water Lloyd. My Bro was houseboating at Shuswap
with some buddies. One guy got a fish on and dropped the rod, just
stood and watched. My bro jumped off the top deck, grabbed the rod,
played the fish while swimming back to the boat. Saved the rod and
caught a nice rainbow.

Okay, I can well appreciate how someone would become familiar with the
sound of fishing rods, eye glasses and keys hitting the water. How did
you manage to lose a starting battery overboard?

Pffftttt!!!! Child's play, I lost a 10 horse motor while trolling. I was
sixteen at the time, believe me, no one was impressed. I did manage to
retrieve it though. I can't recall the sound it made, as the sound of air
rushing through my ears and in the space where my brain should have been was
deafening.

Ever race a J-class? You start with the battery, then remove it to save
weight. I've seen several go "thunkk!" over the years.

LOL - I can relate! I've lost (among other things...) a downrigger and a BBQ
(downrigger sounds pretty much like the starting battery, couldn't hear the BBQ
go in - it was blowing 40 knots or so at the time...)

I lost it at the entrance of Blind Bay in about 200 ft of water. You wanna go
after it?
(BTW: There was no fish involved. I had but it along the gunwale for "temporary
storage" and forgot about it. Went up on plane, wind picked up, saw the rod fly
by...sunk by the time I'd turned around.)

My Pop is a plumber <semi retired> And he is very good with welding and
has alot of equipment in his shop. He would make anything that ne
needed. Well he had made a cage to carry a battery that we used for a
trolling motor on our little fishing boat to the house for charging. The
battery was just a regular car battery. Anyway this was made out of
angle iron. Flat pieces on the bottom to hold the battery. and then two
pieces that went up until a arch was formed. It was open on the sides.
<I think it was as heavy as the battery.> But back then in the late
70's I had never seen a battery with any type of handles to assist in
moving it so it did make it easier as way had to tote it up and down a
hill.

Well I was removing it from the aluninum fishing boat and sort of slid
it up the side as the boat was tied center to the slip. When the battery
cleared the side of the boat it was at a angle annnnnd thunnk!!! It went
:-)

I was forteen or fifteen at the time... But I never did forget that
sound. Or the sound my Pop made when I told him..

Had a watch band snap after turing off the valve to a hydrolift. It went

The little springs that jump out of a Merc control box kind of go
"ploop".

Those descriptions are very accurate I lost my keys and glasses one evening.
Dropped my keys, went in after them then realized my glasses were on.
Who'da thunk it?
