The First Annual Doll and Teddy Bear Expo - with thousands of dolls and teddy bears from major manufacturers and creators from around the world, takes place August 27-28 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia. Sponsored by Collector Communications Corporation, publishers of the most widely-read collector magazines in this field, the Expo will include rare dolls and teddy bears never before displayed, and the world's most expensive teddy bear, Kristopher, a circa 1912 bear made in Germany by the renowned Steiff Co. Expo will be Kristopher's only American appearance before he is auctioned in November by Sotheby's London who expect him to fetch close to $100,000. Tweed Roosevelt, great grandson of Teddy Roosevelt - the inspiration for the "teddy bear" - will be on hand to greet Kristopher. A highlight of the Expo weekend will be the Dolls Awards of Excellence and the Teddy Bear Review Golden Teddy Awards Banquet. Past winners and other celebrities will present this year's top artists and manufacturers with the highest awards in the field. Top artisans will talk about the creation of unusal bears and dolls. Glenn Mandeville, a leading Barbie dolls appraiser, author and world- renowned Barbie authority, will appraise pre-1969 Barbies. Appraisers will also be available to determine the value of teddy bears brought to Expo by the public. Additional Expo features include the Hall of Today exhibit filled with contemporary dolls and teddy bears from every significant manufacturer and artist and special choices from Gund, The Franklin Mint, and Madame Alexander, among others. The Hall of Yesteryear will spotlight doll artists from the 40's, 50's and 60's and bears from the past. Special exhibits include "35 Years of Barbie," Presidents and First Lady Dolls," "Dolls of Color: A Collection of Ethnic Dolls," special items from the Steiff archives and selections from Gary Green's Madame Alexander collection of over 3,000 dolls. Every exhibiting artist and manufacturer has been asked to create a special commemorative piece for the Expo.
