Greetings! I've been mostly lurking for a couple of years here, contributing where my meager knowledge allows but mostly just learning a lot. [Thanks!] My question for y'all today is on horsey magazines... What magazine(s) do you like and why? What areas do they focus on? How techincal are they? etc etc. -- Tim Pointing, DCIEM tim@dciem.dnd.ca or tim@ben.dciem.dnd.ca

Well, here goes
Practical Horseman (useful information/English)
Horse & Rider (useful information/Western and general)
Equus (this is about as technical/scientific as I get)
Western Horseman (this is the one I grew up on)
Chronicle of the Horse (for Thoroughbred information)
Midwest Sport Horse (this is mostly advertisements, stories on one side of the
page about a horse whose stud fee is on the other side of the page)
Appaloosa Journal (for Appaloosa information)
Appaloosa Sport Horse (I think the name has changed to just Sport Horse
and they're now covering other breeds, but I haven't seen an issue for
a couple years)
The Corral (newspaper format, local (mostly Ohio) information,
on everything from endurance/competitive trail, dressage, CT, gymkhana,
hunters/jumpers, barrel racing, rodeo, state breed-specific clubs,
==when and where the shows
are, who the trainers are, local judges, horses/trucks/trailers/
etc. for sale==
you name it, if it's got something to do with horses and it's within
a few states of Ohio, it's in the Corral.
I usually subscribe to two or three magazines a year, and switch around
a bit. I'm currently getting Horse & Rider, Equus, Appaloosa Journal,
and the Corral and Midwest Sport Horse.

I subscribe to Practical Horseman and Equus. Being in Canada, I also
get Horse Sport.~
For enjoyment I buy Spur ("The mag of Thoroughbred and Country Life"),
which I describe as National Geographic meets horses. It has the most
beautiful production imaginable. The magazine format includes a
calendar of equestrian events for the following months including
racing, hunter/jumper, polo and steeplechase. It has an article on a
North American show place farm (Sam-Son was featured recently)
articles on riders, a monthly sporting art feature and an article on a
particular area (eg Chesepeake, Virginia Hunt Country, Palm Beach etc)~
When I want to catch up on the hunter/jumper scene from an insiders
view I read "Horses". Although the production of "Horses" is
gorgeous, its "we're on the inside and aren't we fabulous" style makes
me gag.
My two faves are PH and Equus.~
PH has the best technical how-to articles. I enjoy playing along
with the confirmation clinic and reading how George Morris sees
various jumpers.~
If you only buy one magazine, I would recommend Equus. It has how-to
articles as well as general information and a specific article each
month on various horse issues (Laminitis, feeding, movement come to
mind).~

I vote for Practical Horseman & The Chronicle of the Horse. Sonja has already posted excellent descriptions of both. However, I DO enjoy the Chronicle especially since I compete fairly regularly and they have placings for most major shows and a lot of smaller shows. It is a wonderful way to keep up with my competition. I also enjoy reading about the other disciplines covered in the Chronicle. But Cooky McClung *IS THE BEST*. She writes wonderfully witty articles about being a mom, horsewoman, daughter, horsewoman, wife, horsewoman, etc. Mary McHugh
