* Help! Quake won't run.

I just bought a new computer and now I can't get Quake or GLQuake to run.
Both give me the following error : The first DOS window will load up a
second window (with the rocky background texture) but only for a split
second. Almost immediately, that 2nd window disappears, leaving me with the
first and nothing else (the one that calls qlaunch with the -mpath
extension). Nothing is on my windows toolbar, and nothing is on my
desktop - except for this useless 1st window.

(Typically, the first window would open up the 2nd, which would open up the
3rd in full screen size where the game is played. That's when it worked.)

My configuration is :

- BX motherboard
- Matrox Millennium G200 video card
- Diamond Monster II (12 megs)
- Soundblaster Live! sound card
- 256 megs of RAM
- P2/400mhz CPU

Can anyone tell me why I can't run Quake with this setup? I have the latest
SBLive drivers (released 3 days ago) because someone told me he had problems
with his using Quake 2.

Note: I tried running it in DOS mode (without the Windows shortcut) and it
does the same thing : hangs at the qlaunch/mpath command line). And the
exact same files (copy/pasted) work fine at the office.

If this is a common problem, could someone send me the fix or instructions
on how to rectify it?

Thanks a million,

JY

As I understand it, the original Quake does not run under Windows 98 unless you
boot from DOS. It is the prime reason I have not upgraded yet!

Quake and Guakeworld are running just fine on my machine. To install Quake2, I had
to
change my language settings to English (UK) though :)
Although I have no problems blaming win98 for all problems, this time it's make
likely you have a driver problem.

All you need to do is download the Quake GL patch from the net which
replace the original Quake.exe. Quake will then run through Windows
instead using Open GL.

However, Quake and Quake 2 suck big time, Jedi Knight/Unreal/Half-Life
kick there butts big time, Half-Life especially.

Absolutely correct.
For the people that don't have a 3d-accelerator card that supports OpenGL,
they should download WinQuake.

Jedi Knight and Unreal are complete failures at the genre.
Half-Life however is an extremely good game.
You'd be surprised to learn that it's built on the Quake 1 engine ;)
