I have the impression most robberies are pretty quick in-and-out
routines. Check the cookie jar, under the mattress, bureau drawers,
top shelf in the closet; grab the most expensive/portable entertainment
equipment and scram. At least, that's the impression I get reading the
police report section in the paper.
Unfortunately, many apartments either have the vents on the ceiling,
which would make things awkward, or run small-diameter ducting to the
vents. It'd be hard to hide a decent-sized handgun in a 5" diameter
flex-duct, and after a while it'd be a pain in the arse to remove the
screws to get to it.
I'd suggest a stout metal box and a chain wrapped around the plumbing
under the sink, a water pipe, or other relatively immovable object. If
your thief is bringing his hacksaw or bolt cutters he'd still get it,
but your typical smash-and-grabber probably wouldn't.
