SS> A few years back I read a book on heraldic design which included ruler
and compass constructions for drawing well-proportioned shields.
Unfortunately I cannot remember the title or author of this book. I'd
like to figure out how to do this again. The author had two shapes;
one of them the standard "iron-shaped" pointy shield, and the other
squarer (the kind you might want to use for drawing quarterly arms, for
example). I've managed to rediscover the iron-shaped construction, but
I can't remember how to get the other shape. Does anybody know how to
do this?
Depends on how square it is. One way would be to make the straight part of
the sides of the shield one half the width, instead of the standard one
third, before starting the arcs. Another would be to draw essentially a
square, with fillet corners on the bottom (about half or a third of the
width of that quarter ought to do) and an arc on the "point" of an
equivalent radius.
