Not too long ago I sent in a subscription card under the condition that I would get a free issue and have no further obligation. It said to write CANCEL on the bill when it arrived and return it, which I did. They continued to send bills saying that I owed them money. I just ignored the letters and they eventually gave up. The moral of the story?: just don't listen to them when they start to threaten you--it's usually just a ploy to make you feel guilty enough to subscribe. -- Patrick Wirz
